In one of the most surprising gaming-related announcements all year, Nintendo revealed that Cloud Strife will be joining the Super Smash Bros. lineup on both 3DS and Wii U in the near future. The unveiling came earlier this morning during a Nintendo Direct event and it not only showed Cloud slashing away with his signature Buster Sword, but iconic summons like Odin and even his infamous Omnislash limit break.
It also appears that Super Smash Bros. will be adding a new stage based on Midgar, where Final Fantasy VII takes place.
Nintendo didn’t announce a specific date for the addition of Cloud and the Midgar stage yet, but the more interesting question is whether or not we will get a Cloud amiibo figurine. At the end of the announcement trailer, the video also showed off new Chocobo costumes for Mii fighter.
Considering Final Fantasy VII never made it to any Nintendo systems, it’s a bit of a surprise to see Cloud joining the Super Smash Bros. roster. Square Enix however does have a great relationship with Nintendo with a good number of Final Fantasy-themed games that are exclusive to the 3DS such as the pair of Theathrhythm games.
Regardless, what a wonderful world we live in that we get to witness Cloud Strife taking on Pac-Man or even Ryu from the Street Fighter series.
