Nintendo’s first smart device app, Miitomo, will arrive in the U.S. on March 31, the company has announced. As a free-to-start social experience, Miitomo aims to let users spark one-of-a-kind conversations with friends in a whole new way by using Mii characters. The app recently launched in Japan where it was downloaded over one-million times in its first three days of availability.
Once users download the app, they will be able to create a Mii character and customize its facial features like eyes and hair as well as voice and personality. Users can also use their camera to take a photo of themselves, which can be used to create a Mii. Lastly, they can also simply import their Mii from their Wii U or 3DS systems by using a QR code.
After their Mii is created, users can add friends to the app in person or by linking the app to existing Facebook or Twitter accounts. Users then answer a series of questions to help create conversations and discussions into a form of play.
To pre-register for Miitomo, you can sign up for a Nintendo Account at miitomo.com before March 31 to receive an email when the app is ready to download. Those that pre-register will also receive Platinum Points for the new My Nintendo rewards program that will launch simultaneously with the app.
“With Miitomo, Nintendo takes its first step into the world of smart devices,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Miitomo brings the special Nintendo charm and polish that people around the world love to an entirely new format and audience.”
