Splatoon is getting a major update on August 5, adding 40 pieces of new gear, an increased level cap and new battle modes. Perhaps the most welcoming news is the addition of Squad Battle, which will allow players to create a squad and play with Ranked Battle rules, instead of getting stuck with random teammates. There will also be a Private Battle mode that will allow players to create their own lobbies with two to eight friends. Teams won’t have to be balanced in Private Battle either, so players can setup some 4v3 games if they’d like.
For both Regular and Ranked Battle modes, levels will be increased from 20 to 50 for Regular Battle and A and A+ to S and S+ for Ranked Battle.
Along with the 40 new pieces of gear that include items such as a leather jacket to a sushi chef costume, new weapons will be also added to Splatoon. One of those weapons will be the Slosher, a bucket-like projectile that hurls paint at an impressive range, the perfect weapon to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. Another weapon being added is the Splatling, which Nintendo described, “With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type.”
Nintendo promises that more content will continually roll out for Splatoon through the rest of the summer and fall, including the Rainmaker Ranked Battle mode, additional maps and new weapons.
