Splatoon is adding a new Ranked Battle mode on Friday, August 14 starting at 7:00 PM PT / 10:00 PM ET. Called Rainmaker, it will be the third Ranked Battle mode in the playlist, joining the existing Splat Zones and Tower Control modes. In the new Ranked Battle mode, both teams will fight to get control of the Rainmaker, that looks a bit like a a golden fish head. Once a person on a team grabs the Rainmaker, the goal is to carry it into the other team’s base, similar to Capture the Flag.
What makes the mode a bit different than a traditional Capture the Flag is that the Rainmaker spawns with a shield so players will have to bust it out first. There’s also only one Rainmaker on the map so players will have to fight over possession of it.
If a player gets splatted while holding the Rainmaker, it will be dropped and its shield will also reactivate. And since the golden fish head-looking item is crazy heavy, players won’t be able to Super Jump while carrying it. Also, players won’t be completely helpless while carrying the Rainmaker as it’ll shoot ink like an Inkzooka and is able to be charged up for an extra powerful shot.
The closer a team gets to the enemy base while holding the Rainmaker, the lower the goal distance will drop. If someone retreats too far while holding the Rainmaker, it’ll explode sooner. If a battle ends without anyone getting it to the goal, the team with the lowest goal distance will win.
