After years of rumors and speculation, the new Nintendo Switch will be arriving in just a matter of months. The company will share more details about its upcoming console at a press event in Tokyo, which you can watch live streaming above. The hybrid console aims to blend the best of both worlds of handheld and home, allowing you to game on the go with the exact same titles you’d expect at home. It’s also quite versatile from what Nintendo has shown off so far, with detachable controllers called “Joy-Con.”
What we do know so far is that the Nintendo Switch can connect to a home television when resting in its dock and when it is lifted out, it will “instantly transition to portable mode,” Nintendo said last year when it first revealed the Switch. Exact specifications on the device have not been revealed, and so far all Nintendo has said is that it offers a “high-definition” display.
Since it is also designed to be a portable device, the Switch will use cartridges that will be called GameCards. It has also been confirmed by Nvidia that it will run on Nvidia hardware, more specifically, a custom system-on-a-chip that is based on its Tegra line of mobile processors.
Hopefully Nintendo will address some major questions that everyone has been wondering, including price, battery life and whether it will be backward compatible with other Nintendo systems. Expect to see plenty of launch titles being announced and shown during the presentation that starts at 8:00 PM Pacific / 11:00 PM Eastern.
